BOQ checks before you send it: the questions that save arguments

Once a bill of quantities is with the contractor, it is hard to fix. A few short BOQ checks before you send it save arguments on site. These are checks you can do without any tool.

Example / illustration: every line has a source
Item and source Quantity
WallSheet A-101, layer A-WALL 324.5 m²
DoorsSheet A-101, layer A-DOOR 18 pcs
ConcreteSheet S-201, layer S-CONC 42.3 m³

Do the totals add up?

Calculate again: quantity times price equals the line total. Line totals add up to the sub-chapter, and sub-chapters add up to the chapter. A total that stayed old after you added a line is a common mistake.

Which line is not counted?

A line marked "not for sum" stays out of the grand total. Check that this was a decision and not a fault. Sometimes an optional item is left out by mistake, and its cost disappears from the offer.

What is missing?

Some items imply other items. Tiles in a wet room need waterproofing. A concrete floor needs reinforcement. Demolition needs waste removal. If you see one item without the other, ask why.

What hides in a lump sum?

A lump-sum line with quantities in its description, for example how many m² of walls to demolish, hides the measurement. Split it into lines. Then you can compare each quantity with the plan.

Are there duplicate lines?

The same description and the same quantity in two lines is sometimes a forgotten copy. The totals still add up, so an arithmetic check will not catch it. Go through lines with a similar description and an equal quantity. We wrote about unit checks here.
