Plan file formats for quantity takeoff: what works today

A quantity takeoff is only as good as the file it starts from. Some files hold clean lines and layers. Others hold only a picture of a drawing. This guide lists what BOQIFY reads today, so you can check your files before you upload them.

DWG and DXF drawings

DWG and DXF are the usual CAD formats. They keep a drawing as lines, layers and entities. That is what a takeoff from DWG needs: BOQIFY can follow a line to its layer and its entity. This is why every line of the BOQ shows the sheet, the layer and the entity it came from.

Vector PDF

A PDF saved from CAD software keeps its lines as vectors, and BOQIFY can read it. A takeoff from PDF works with this kind of file.

Revit: IFC first

For Revit models we recommend an IFC export. You can also use an RVT file. BOQIFY reads it through your studio's own Autodesk account.

A quick check before you upload

  • Is the file a DWG, a DXF, a vector PDF or an IFC export?
